I have been an artist ever since I was able to hold a crayon. I enjoy painting because it helps me to appreciate the world around me: both natural and man-made. As I sketch an iris in my garden, its petals burst open before my eyes. Trained in architecture, I also marvel at the amazing structures we have built, from the Pantheon in Rome, to a timber framed barn in Michigan. When I paint, I hope to share an experience with the viewer: not only the physical appearance of the place, but also its mystery and spirit. Although I create my larger paintings indoors at my studio, I frequently sketch outdoors in a watercolor journal. Many of my studio paintings are done in soft pastels, although I also work in oil, colored pencil, graphite and watercolor. My work has been exhibited in the Pastel Society of America annual exhibition in 2010 and 2011, and featured in the Pastel Journal best of 100 competition in 2010. I am a member of the Great Lakes Pastel Society, and was awarded their silver medal at their annual exhibition in 2011. |
